THE Eastern Zone Premier Netball Competition began on Friday night with matches between Sale and Bairnsdale at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex, and two-closely contested games at Churchill.
Sale also hosted the 15 and under division matches, which began last night.
The competition has been running in a variety of formats since 2007, helping many players, umpires and coaches taking the next step into higher levels of competition.
The competition, originally organised by Netball Victoria, has been handed to the local netball organisations to administer.
The 15 and under division play at GRSC on Monday nights, with open and 17 and under division at Latrobe Leisure Churchill.
The 2019 the competition will run through to March 29, with the grand finals off all three divisions played at Churchill.
All spectators on grand final night will have the chance to win tickets to the Melbourne Vixens’ Super Netball match against the Giants.
IN round one of the open division, Bairnsdale defeated Sale 49-44.
A combined team from Churchill and Traralgon football-netball clubs defeated a revamped Mid Gippsland team, 42-41 with a goal on the siren from a penalty.
BAIRNSDALE set the standard in the 17 and under competition, easily accounting for Sale, 56-25.
North Gippsland took on Gippsland League in a fiercely-contested match.
The normally dominant Gippsland League began the game in style, capitalising on the unforced errors from its unsettled opposition.
Following a settling in period, North Gippsland fought back to draw level by half-time.
Gippsland took advantage of North Gippsland goal attack and playmaker Chloe Finn going down with cramp late in the match to score three quick goals to win 42-39.
THIS Friday night in the 17 and under competition, Mid Gippsland will take to the court for its first match of the season following a bye, and will have its work cut out against Bairnsdale, while Sale will meet North Gippsland, with both teams looking to open their accounts. Gippsland has the bye.
Sale will be wanting to make amends for their first round loss in the open when it plays Churchill-Traralgon, while Mid Gippsland will meet Bairnsdale.
All matches will be played in Churchill, with the 17 and under matches beginning at 7.15pm and the open from at 8.30pm.
