LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
HEADSPACE support centres provide a free service to assist young people aged between 12 and 25 years of age with mental health issues. To access private professional help can be a very costly and futile exercise, as I have discovered personally.
I’ve recently been made aware of extra federal government funding being provided to Headspace support centres which has been used to open a new centre in Bass Coast Shire, in Wonthaggi. This funding is on top of the $95.7 million received by the organisation each year.
The Wonthaggi centre brings the total number of Headspace centres in Gippsland to three, with the other centres being in East Gippsland Shire (Bairnsdale) and Latrobe City (Morwell).
Wellington Shire has the second highest percentage in Gippsland of young people in this age group who are able to access this free service, yet we continue to be overlooked.
For a young person needing help this means a trip to Bairnsdale or Morwell. With lack of transport options available, this makes it difficult for a youth without a driver’s licence to access the service freely.
I have decided to take some action and have set up a petition to be forwarded to our local federal member Darren Chester in the hope we may hopefully have a Headspace centre in Sale.
If you would like to show your support, copies of the petition are available to sign at the following businesses around Sale and surrounds Clocktower Medical Centre, Inglis Medical Centre, Ramahyuck Gippsland Family Practice, Sale Combined Kinders (IGA car park), Johnson Street Clinic, Maffra and Stratford Medical Centre.
