WOMEN’S representative cricket got a start on Sunday.
The Gippsland Cricket League saw Sale-Maffra travel to Wy Yung to take on defending champion Bairnsdale.
Sale-Maffra gained some revenge for its 2019-20 grand final defeat, accounting for Bairnsdale by 36 runs.
Megen Wrigglesworth shone with 26 for the Sharks, and was well-supported by Tilly Pendergast, who scored 16, and Kirrily Bruce, 12.
For Bairnsdale, Bec Stevens took 3-3 with four maidens in her six and a half overs. Kayla Hayles finished with 3-20.
In reply, Bairnsdale had Lilly Bastion stranded on 16 not out when the innings closed at 69. Katie Garth with 10 was the only other batter into double figures.
Bowling honours for Sale-Maffra went to Jazz Anstee with 2-5. Six other bowlers took a wicket each in a good all-round team performance.
Meanwhile in the Latrobe Valley, Centrals took the points in the local derby against Latrobe.
The game had been seasoned by several key Latrobe players seeking clearances to Centrals earlier in the week.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Latrobe was dismissed for 93. Grace Lewis and Zoe Long scored 15 and 13 respectively, while Ryley Reid, Taylah Kilpatrick and Kristen Turrell each claimed two wickets for Centrals.
Centrals scored 2-133 from 20 overs, with Reid unbeaten on 37 and Emily Shaw was 21 not out. Earlier, Bridie Kimpton had made 17.
Grace Lewis and Danielle Van Vliet took a wicket each for Latrobe.
The next round will be played on Sunday, November 15, the same day the senior men’s, under 18s and under 15s will begin.
