LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
AMNESTY International Gippsland added its voice to the tens of thousands calling for the cessation of offshore detention and processing by tweeting ‘”stay strong, stay safe” messages to the thousands in detention.
Australia is spending millions of dollars to keep legal asylum seekers in offshore detention facilities where facts have been uncovered about widespread abuse of children, women and men.
Most Australians believe in protecting children and a fair go, and this isn’t it.
Asylum seekers are around one in a thousand arrivals, and most arrive by plane.
Why do we treat people who arrive by sea so differently and so badly?
Can’t we re-allocate the millions of dollars spent there to here and process people on Australian soil by Australians, in Australia.
