THE Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund (GERF) has launched an appeal to raise money to support Gippsland residents impacted by the current fire and flood emergency.
GERF has always responded promptly to assist residents in time of emergency and unfortunately, are again faced with circumstances where vital financial support to fire and flood victims is required.
As these emergencies unfold, it is clear families, farmers and impacted communities are adversely impacted by the recent bushfires, as well as the current flood emergency, and will need assistance in recovery.
GERF President Andy Tegart said work was being done behind the scenes to help those in need.
“Assessments are underway by Municipal Recovery Managers and we would like to be in a position to respond promptly when referrals for financial assistance come through,” he said.
“Every dollar donated to the appeal is distributed to those affected by fire or flood and individuals and businesses in Gippsland have always been very generous in their support.”
The Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund has been supporting Gippsland residents impacted by natural disaster since 1978 and is run completely by volunteers.
“It is most unusual for us to run an appeal for both fire and flood victims at the same time,” Mr Tegart said.
“The forecast conditions for the coming fire season may also draw on GERF support for impacted residents in Gippsland.”
Wellington Shire Council Mayor, Ian Bye welcomed the announcement that GERF was launching a Fire and Flood Appeal to support Gippslanders impacted by these significant emergency events.
“The Wellington community is a resilient bunch, and in times like this we know that communities will come together and support each other, especially when conditions continue to change so quickly,” Cr Bye said.
“We continue to speak to community members looking for ways to give back to people impacted, and this fundraiser is the perfect way to help and make sure it lands in the hands of people who need it. The Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund will work with council to identify impacted people and allocate funds to support relief and recovery activities.
“The Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund has facilitated over $19 million worth of emergency resources and funding to Gippslanders for over 40 years, and we fully endorse the Fire and Flood Appeal.”
Donations to the appeal can be easily made via the GERF website at gerf.org.au and all donations over $2.00 are tax deductible.
