LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
JOSH Hanrahan’s article states that ‘animal welfare groups and ethical dog breeders’ are against proposed puppy breeding legislation.
Leaving aside the dubious definition of an ethical dog breeder, Mr Hanrahan refers to the Pet Industry Association of Australia (PIAA) as being critical of the proposal.
Is he suggesting that the PIAA is an animal welfare group?
The PIAA, as the name implies, is an industry support group for its members, who are individuals and businesses engaged in making money from pet owners.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I would have thought that an animal welfare group was a not for profit group concerned with the welfare of animals not businesses.
I can find no mention of such a group in Mr Hanrahan’s article, but I would be very interested to know what true animal welfare groups think of the proposed legislation.
Editor’s note: The Pet Industry Association of Australia is referred to in the article as “the national body representing the pet industry”.
